Perhaps you've detected a team that broke training camp with no half-court sets seems to be running quite a few lately. If these developments have flown under your radar, I'm sure this has captured your attention. The Mavericks have won more games than they did to start the season. Motion plays a bigger role in this offense than it did the last two seasons. The players do have more freedom. But it does not rise to the level of creative madness that guard Jason Terry once predicted would be unleashed. The Princeton offense has come and gone. The idea that the Mavericks would generate the majority of their shots out of movement instead of sets has been scrapped. "That whole Princeton stuff was a great idea, but it's tough to determine shots out of there," forward Dirk Nowitzki said. "We run it a little less than we did at the beginning of the year and are calling more plays where guys are more comfortable. "Maybe we aren't a team that is just running and slicing and dicing and cutting. Maybe we weren't really meant for that. Maybe we're not smart enough. I don't know. "But it's been good. We know the sets. We know the go-to plays. We've just got to keep on working." Every player wants more offensive freedom. That doesn't mean he can handle it. It was unrealistic to ask this team to put away its structured past and flourish in a new system overnight. Carlisle and his staff knew this. The plan was to push the motion offense, gain an understanding of what worked then massage the scheme to fit the skills and comfort level of this group. "It was more of a feeling-out period for Coach and also for us," point guard Jason Kidd said. "How can he put us in positions to be successful?" The answer: pick and roll. The Mavericks initiated 25 to 30 percent of their offense out of the pick-and-roll to open the season. And now? "About 90 percent," Kidd said. He's joking. Slightly. Kidd estimates 75 percent of the offense now starts with the pick-and-roll. "We're trying to spread things out, give guys more of a chance to penetrate and be a little bit more creative," Kidd said. "We want to play to our strengths, pick-and-roll and move the ball. We've been getting some wide-open looks." The Mavericks scored 100 or more points twice in the first eight games. They have now done so in three straight and six of the last eight. The Mavericks have done this even though Josh Howard, the team's second-leading scorer, has missed the last five games. There have been other factors in the Mavericks' turnaround from a 2-7 start. Defensive rebounding is chief among them. But Carlisle's willingness to tweak the offense ranks right there. "There is not as much motion, but we know specifically what we need to get done each night," Terry said. "We're attacking the other team's weakness. "You're going to try different things and play the percentages. For us, that [Princeton] offense, percentage- wise, wasn't working for us. "But it's still in the tank.
