Avery Johnson didn't leave his home near Houston at the crack of dawn
Thursday, race through the airport once his flight landed then drive to
Samuell High School to discuss his time with the Dallas Mavericks.
He was here to talk to students about the need to make better decisions in
their lives.
But in between his speech and signing copies of his book, Johnson was asked
if he's bothered by negative comments made about him since his departure.
"Oh, not at all," Johnson says. "That's part of getting fired. You know,
whether it's a lie or the truth, hey, I've got tough skin, man.
"We had an awesome run. The run came to an end. It was time to give the
baton, whether it was willingly or unwillingly, to somebody else to run."
There have been accusations that Johnson's early success as a coach went to
his head. Owner Mark Cuban said so many players asked to be traded that he
had no choice but to let his coach go at the end of last season. Dirk
Nowitzki and former Mavericks point guard Devin Harris have used the word
dictator in discussing Johnson.
"Most of the time, when a coach has to be a dictator is when he doesn't have
a great leader," Johnson says. "You think [Boston's] Doc Rivers has to be a
dictator?
"No. Kevin Garnett is the dictator."
Why focus simply on the end? Johnson led the Mavericks to the Finals for the
only time in their history. He takes pride in the young players that have
developed like Harris, Josh Howard, Brandon Bass and a certain point guard
from Puerto Rico.

"You know, even right now, J.J. Barea, he all of a sudden didn't just pop
up," Johnson says.
He takes pride in the accomplishments of veteran Jason Terry.
"Jet is the MVP of the Mavericks right now," Johnson said. "Really and truly,
if it hadn't been for Jet, I probably would have been fired a long time ago.
I love to see what he's doing right now. He's playing some awesome ball.
"At the end of the day, I look at the body of work here, and it's something
to be proud of."
With that, Johnson excuses himself. A crowd gathers around him at the foot of
the stage. He graciously stands for a series of cellphone photos before
looking over his shoulder and announcing, "And I still love the owner. He
gave me a chance."
Johnson lingers another 15 minutes or so in the auditorium, autographing
copies of his book, Aspire Higher, and talking individually with students. He
will speak at Thomas Jefferson later in the day.
A donor has purchased 2,000 copies of Johnson's book to distribute to ninth
grade, junior varsity and varsity basketball teams (boys and girls) in the
Dallas Independent School District. He hopes to use this as a model and do
the same tour with schools in Houston, New Orleans and Laredo. His family,
his devotion to men's ministry and his work with ESPN take up the rest of his
time.
Johnson will coach again.
But he's in no hurry.
"This is a great time for me to take a hiatus away from coaching," he says.
"I'm having a wonderful time with my family. Down the road, a year or two or
three years from now, who knows what is going to happen?
"But I love what I'm doing right now."
