An hour or so before Friday's game, Dallas
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban spent some time chatting with New Jersey president
Rod Thorn and his sidekick, Kiki Vandeweghe.
The last time this happened, during February's visit, things ended badly for
the Mavericks.
That's the short-term view, at least. It's probably a bit unfair to the
Mavericks, who still don't know what the deal will look like at the finish
line. A push deeper into the playoffs might change the perspective. Huge
salary-cap relief in a year or two might allow a big free-agent splash.
Right now, however, it's not open to debate. New Jersey cleaned the
Mavericks' clock on the deal.
Of course, Devin Harris would have never had a game like this when he was in
a Mavericks uniform. There was no chance for him to create in the offense and
utilize his skills playing for Avery Johnson.
That's why, at the end of Friday's game, the small, but lively New Jersey
crowd began chanting: "Thank-you, Cu-ban."
