82games.com, the premier NBA stats geek site, did a study of all the
game-winning shot opportunities since the beginning of the 2003-04 season.
Kobe has made one more than Dirk (13-12), but Dirk has hit a much higher
percentage (.324-.250 -- league average: .298.)
Yeah, but Dirk always disappears in the playoffs, right? Wrong.
Kobe and LeBron have the most playoff winners during that time span, hitting
four of eight attempts each. Dirk (3-of-6) is next on the list. Plus, he's
6-of-8 on game-winning free throws in the playoffs. To put that in
perspective, there are eight players who have hit at least two playoff
game-winning shots in the time covered by this study.
The other seven combined to shoot eight free throws in game-winning situations.
Jason Terry (8-of-26) is the only other active Maverick to crack the list of
the top 76 game-winning shot makers in the last five-plus seasons.
