Opponents to see more of Dampier, Singleton

DALLAS — As the Dallas Mavericks make their final push for a higher playoff
seeding, they will find out in the next week whether bigger is better.
Coach Rick Carlisle has said size matters in the NBA, and now he has no
choice but to test that theory.
Erick Dampier and James Singleton, two of the Mavericks’ most physical
players along with Brandon Bass, are going to get plenty of playing time in
the absence of Josh Howard and Devean George. Their level of play will have
as much to do with the Mavericks’ short-term success as anything.
Carlisle has watched the Mavericks’ poor rebounding in the past three games
and knows the best chance to rectify it is to keep his strongest players on
the floor whenever possible.
"[Singleton] will be in there sometimes with Damp and Dirk (Nowitzki), and we
’re very big," Carlisle said. "But whoever’s out there, we’re going to
have to scramble to get rebounds because the discrepancy of possessions is
going to get you after a while."
Like it almost did Tuesday, when Detroit took 92 shots and the Mavericks took
only 67. They were lucky to hang on for a two-point win. Those kind of
showings won’t be good enough on back-to-back road games starting tonight in
Atlanta.
Dampier has played solidly of late. Carlisle said the 6-foot-11 center will
have to put in more time on the court, even if it means Carlisle has to alter
his thinking.
"Sometimes, I’ve got to be a little more patient about leaving him out there
or getting him back in," Carlisle said.
Dampier had no explanation for why he played just nine minutes in Los Angeles
against the Lakers. He pulled down seven rebounds in that brief stay on the
court. He also had 10 rebounds in 20 minutes at Golden State.
He followed that with 13 rebounds in 33 minutes Tuesday. Yet, the Mavericks
continue to get whipped badly overall in the rebounding department.
Dampier has remained upbeat despite some inconsistent playing time. He said
when he plays a lot, he usually produces. That’s hard to argue as the
Mavericks are at their best when he plays 30 minutes or more. But it has only
happened 11 times. They are 8-3 in those games.
"I’ve always said whenever he’s a factor for us on both ends of the floor,
we’re tough to beat," Nowitzki said.
Said Dampier: "I don’t worry about the points. I just have to rebound, block
shots and set good picks. Some nights we rebound the ball better than others.
But we’re not throwing anybody under the bus. We have to go out there and do
the job together."
The Pistons grabbed 17 offensive rebounds Tuesday, which they turned into 27
points and, nearly, a win.
"When that happens," Nowitzki said, "everything becomes a drag."
Briefly
The hot topic after a weightlifting and brief practice session Wednesday was
the NCAA Tournament. The players, like everybody else, were busy filling
brackets. "Actually, we had some guys filling it out during our film
session," Nowitzki joked.
Brandon Bass said he hadn’t filled his out yet. "But it won’t take long,"
the LSU product said. "I’m picking my school to go all the way."
The Mavericks play at Indiana on Friday. After that, there are four days off
before Golden State visits Wednesday. "It’s almost like a second All-Star
break," Nowitzki said. "Hopefully we can get Josh back within a week and then
make a fun push up the seedings."

The Dampier effect The Mavericks have a better chance of winning this season
when Erick Dampier plays at least 30 minutes.
30 minutes or more:
Gm Pts. Rebs. W-L (Pct.)
11 9.4 8.5 8-3 (.727)
29 minutes or less:
Gm Pts. Rebs. W-L (Pct.)
57 4.8 6.8 33-24 (.579)
