Bumped, bruised Dirk Nowitzki doesn't get calls

DENVER – Dirk Nowitzki was slumped in a locker-room chair after the game and
could feel his hours of work wearing on his head.
And his shoulder, as well as his bruised and scratched hands and wrists.
They had all taken a beating during Game 1 of the Western Conference
semifinals.
He made four attempts at the free throw line, five if you include a technical
foul shot he took. Seemed a little implausible to his coach, at least.
"It's hard for me to believe Dirk Nowitzki only shoots four free throws
during this game with the way he's being played," Rick Carlisle said. "And
I'll look at that closely. If the referees were right, they were right. But
he's being played very physically, way [out] on the floor, where the rules
are different than in post play.
"That's something we'll look at, and if there's a complaint to be made, we'll
talk to the league about it."
Carlisle insisted he didn't want to turn this into a whine party about the
referees. Never mind that the last 16 times Dan Crawford has refereed one of
their playoff games, the Mavericks have one win. At least he's out of the way
early this series.
Nowitzki didn't want to get dragged into any discussion about the referees.
"It is what it is," Nowitzki said. "I'm not going to sit here and complain
about it. We knew they were going to play tough."
The Mavericks will go over Game 1 film with a fine-tooth comb. What they'll
be looking for is a pattern of plays that cross beyond the rules. If they see
the same thing happening over and over, they'll make the league office aware.
That happened in 2005, when their series against Houston turned after illegal
screens by Yao Ming were sent to the league.
It wasn't just Denver's work against Nowitzki. The Nuggets shot 36 free
throws to 13 for the Mavericks.
"The foul discrepancy was too great to overcome," Carlisle said. "We're going
to have to raise our level of aggression if that's what's going to get us to
the line.
"It's hard to believe that we committed 29 fouls and they committed 19, but
I'll look at the film closely and see if that's the case. And if that's the
case, we're going to have to get a lot more aggressive."
■ Not so important: Both teams thought rebounding would be a major
determining factor for success.
Not so in Game 1.
The Mavericks won the board game, 37-30, but the Nuggets shot 55 percent for
the game and were 34-of-56 (60.7 percent) in the final three quarters.
The bottom line: The Nuggets didn't need to crash the offensive boards.
■ Impenetrable at home: Going back to the regular season, the Nuggets have
won 14 consecutive games at the Pepsi Center.
The only visitors who have won in Denver since Feb. 1 are Boston and Houston,
who still are alive in the playoffs.
■ Briefly: In NBA history, the team winning Game 1 of a best-of-7 series
wins the series 78.5 percent of the time (303 of 386). ... Erick Dampier
suffered a twisted left ankle in the first quarter but still played 22
minutes. He wore a wrap on it after the game and said it was sore. He'll get
treatment overnight and today and see how it feels at practice, he said. ...
Josh Howard also rolled his right ankle – his good ankle. He said both were
sore after the game.
