Next I suppose you will try to tell me that Arlen Specter is no longer a Republican. The Mavericks’ normally unflappable point guard was rattled by Denver’s frenetic, trapping defense. A player who turned the ball over three times in the team’s first-round series with San Antonio now owns the Mavericks’ postseason record for most turnovers in a regulation game. "Well, if I was going for a triple-double, I should have stayed in and kicked it around a couple of more times," Kidd said. "I should have been more aggressive and held the ball longer instead of picking it up. When I picked it up, they swarmed me. That’s what they live for." The Mavericks won’t be alive much longer if they don’t protect the ball. The Nuggets forced 20 turnovers and converted those into 25 points. That played a bigger role in Denver’s Game 1 victory than the free throw discrepancy or any other injustice the Mavericks perceived. In the words of philosopher/coach George Karl, these Nuggets are aggressive physically and conceptually. They will put two defenders on Kidd. They will chase the ball all over the court and force the other Mavericks to make quick decisions. Those decisions were frequently wrong in Game 1. Denver’s 15 steals set a postseason record against the Mavericks. "Sometimes they might see gaps, and the gaps close quick because we have some really athletic guys on our team," Denver’s Chauncey Billups explained. Rick Carlisle believes his team must play with aggression and discretion to beat Denver. Discretion was lacking Sunday afternoon. That is Kidd’s department. "We’ve got to take better care of the ball," Kidd said.
