Dampier’s struggles continue against up-tempo opponents

Erick Dampier is a big guy. At 6-foot-11 and 265 pounds, he has a lot to
carry from one end of the court to the other. It’s even more difficult when
he has to do it fast, so it’s no surprise he tends to struggle against
up-tempo teams. The Denver Nuggets are an up-tempo team. Going into Game 4,
he was averaging 3 points and 4.3 rebounds in the series, well below his
averages of 8.4 points and 8.4 rebounds in the San Antonio series. And while
the Mavericks don’t rely on Dampier for scoring, he didn’t even play more
than 22 minutes in any of the first three games. His problems against these
kinds of teams are nothing new. Dampier averaged just a point and 3.4 boards
against the Golden State Warriors in Dallas’ 2007 first-round playoff loss,
and played only 23 minutes against Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns in the
2006 Western Conference Finals. He went scoreless in Game 5 and grabbed four
rebounds.
