It wasn’t last call for Dallas Mavericks’ radio announcer

DALLAS — Dallas Mavericks players and coaches weren’t the only ones whose
seasons were on the line Monday night at American Airlines Center. Game 4
also was a potential season-ender for radio play-by-play announcer Chuck
Cooperstein.
Before the game, Cooperstein said he does not treat elimination games
different than other games.
"The game’s the game," he said. "Hopefully, it’ll be a great game and I’ll
have a chance to get excited."
But once the final game of the season is in the books, things begin to feel
different.
"The weird part," he said, "is the morning after the last game when you don’
t have another game to prepare for, and you won’t for another five months."
During his off-season, Cooperstein will fill in as needed on ESPN/103.3 FM.
He looks forward to having his 13-year-old son, Jeffrey, with him for the
entire month of July. The two will follow the Texas Rangers on road trips to
Los Angeles and Seattle.
Cooperstein’s off-season also will include a lot of golf.
"I know there’s a tee time waiting for me somewhere," he said.
But after the Mavs’ 119-117 victory over the Denver Nuggets, that tee time
can wait.
Cold shooters
They call it a giveaway for a reason, don’t they?
At Victory Plaza before the game, fans lined up at a portable basketball goal
and launched shots from the top of the key and, for women and kids, the
free-throw line.
Anyone making a shot received a coupon for free salsa and chips at Chili’s.
Your intrepid Courtside Journal-ist charted 50 shots. Two went in. That’s a
4 percent shooting clip, and we’re not talking about shooting with a carnival
’s warped basketball on a too-small rim.
Give him an assist
Richard Robinson of Bedford is "The A Man."
Robinson, 27, sits at the top of Section 113 wearing a Mavs jersey with an
"A" on the back. He hangs an "A" on the railing every time Jason Kidd dishes
out an assist.
Monday night, he posted six A’s.
Robinson, in his second season on the job, said one of his career highlights
came March 1 when Kidd recorded his 10,000th career assist.
It was an honor to be able to hang that 'A,’ Robinson said.
