The Detroit Pistons are looking at a year or two of mediocrity after blowing
up their team, but that might be enough to get Avery Johnson's attention.
The Pistons fired Michael Curry today and Johnson's name is sure to surface.
A good writer friend in Detroit already has said Johnson's name has come up
in internal discussions.
There's only one person who should care about that in Dallas: Mark Cuban.
It would save Cuban a few million bucks if he took the Detroit job. Whatever
Johnson's salary would be in Detroit, it would be subtracted from the roughly
$4 million that Cuban owes Johnson for next season.
Rest assured, Johnson loves the winning percentage he built with the
Mavericks and he doesn't want to see that take a major hit. He's very
unlikely to take a job with a team that projects as a 50-loss team.
The Pistons aren't going to be that bad. At least not for an extended period.
As long as Johnson learns a little bit about flexibility, which was one of
his problem areas with the Mavericks, he can be a rousing success with the
Pistons.
