http://tinyurl.com/ygyq3ps If the Mavericks can get 50 points a night out of Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Marion, they'll be thrilled with their new forward tandem. Clearly, they can't have Nowitzki score 34 of them and expect it to add up to a victory. The induction of Marion into the Mavericks' system started slowly Tuesday night. He went two quarters without a point, owning just the six he got in the first quarter going into the fourth. Hanging the season-opening loss on Marion would be unfair. But anybody could see Marion wasn't his usual self, a few late-game buckets notwithstanding. The Mavericks need Marion to be his all-over-the-court self. That wasn't evident in the loss to Washington. Marion did have three blocked shots and a steal, but offensively he disappeared for stretches, and the seven rebounds he had aren't enough. It wasn't just Marion. None of Nowitzki's teammates helped him – at least, not to standards that should be reasonably expected. And there were explanations for Marion's slow start to his Maverick career. He missed most of the preseason with a calf injury. There's no way he could have a nice rhythm with his teammates after 2 1/2 games of exhibition action. Add it all up and the Mavericks are 0-1 and conjuring up memories of last season, when they started 0-4 at home and 2-7 overall. To make sure that doesn't happen again, they will need much more fluid production from everybody not named Nowitzki, including Marion.
