Free Agent Signings to Date July 5, 2010 4:34pm CDT The "Superstars" Dirk Nowitzki - 5 years, $80 million Dirk actually accepted $16 million less than max money to remain with the only team he has known. He's worth every penny the Mavs invested in him as he's one of the top 10 players in the entire league. He was seventh in MVP-voting last season and is clearly the heart and soul of the Mavericks organization. Already 32, the Mavs are hoping that he can remain an elite player for the next five seasons, and while his skills and playing style figure to age gracefully, it is certainly not a lock. Still, there was no way they could have justified letting him get away. After nine straight All-Star games and 10 straight seasons of at least 50 wins, Dirk has already earned this money and should keep the Mavericks near the top of the Western Conference for the length of this contract. However, he took less than max money in order for the team to be able to land a co-star in Dallas. Expect the team to be aggressive this summer in targeting another elite player through trade.
