OKLAHOMA CITY -- From a statistical standpoint, this is the worst season of
Jason Kidd's 17-year NBA career.

Yet he couldn't have been more valuable to the Dallas Mavericks this season.
但KIDD已經展現了他最大的的價值了。
Even at age 38, Kidd is the calming influence for the Mavericks. He can still
dissect a defense and make critical baskets.

"On our team he's a superstar," coach Rick Carlisle said. "That's how
important he is to us."

Kidd showed his value Saturday night when he recorded 13 points, six
rebounds, eight assists and four steals during the Mavericks' 93-87 triumph
over Oklahoma City.

His all-around game enabled the Mavericks to take a 2-1 lead in the
best-of-seven Western Conference Finals.

Wednesday in Dallas.

Kidd is vying to become the oldest star point guard to win an NBA title. At
his age and with a lockout looming, he feels this might be his last chance.

"I hope it is different this year," Kidd said. "We'd love to have that
opportunity.

don't want to be thinking a little bit too far ahead. We just want to
concentrate on Game 4."

Kidd averaged a career-low 7.9 points per game this season. And his average
of 8.2 assists is his lowest since he averaged 7.7 as a rookie with the
Mavericks during the 1994-95 season.

In 2002 and 2003, Kidd led the New Jersey Nets to back-to-back NBA Finals,

"I've watched him and I've seen the work that he puts in, the preparation
that it takes for him to get to the level just to get himself to play a
game," guard Jason Terry said. "To tie his shoes, even, it's amazing.

Utah ex John Stockton, at age 36, was the oldest star point guard to lead his
team to the NBA Finals. But the Jazz lost in six games to the Chicago Bulls.

可惜最後於第六場被公牛淘汰。
Still, for Kidd the comparisons to Stockton are inevitable.
然而，KIDD身為老牌明星控衛，被拿來與老史比較是難免的。
"He was the best," Kidd said. "So if I can come anywhere close to what he
accomplished at his age I'd be very happy."
KIDD說:"他是最棒的的控衛，沒有之一。"

Kidd's value to the Mavericks can hardly be described in pure numbers. He
adds so many intangibles that go way beyond the X's and O's.

"He's extremely valuable for us just because he understands the right
decisions at all times," center Tyson Chandler said. "At the end of the game,
he never gets riled up.

"He always seems even-keeled, and that keeps the guys real calm."

The Mavericks limited Kidd's minutes this season to a career-low 33.2 per
game and have given him days off, including a week off before the playoffs
started.

"He understands this could be his last opportunity to get here, and I think
that's the thinking of a lot of guys on this roster," Chandler said. "This is
a big year for us.

Carlisle views Kidd as sort of a mad scientist type of player, a player who
uses the court as his laboratory.

"He has the ability to process situations at a different and at a higher
level than a lot of us," Carlisle said. "It's part of his genius as a player
and as a leader."

Kidd even sounds like a coach during interviews. Kidd was asked Sunday
whether the Mavs could sustain their level of excellence that helped them win
Game 3.

"I don't think it's going to be hard, in a sense this is the playoffs, and

"You look at how great John Stockton was and he wasn't able to win a title,"
Chandler said. "We're hoping this is Kidd's year.

"I would love to be able to say I won a title with Jason Kidd, and go down in
history and ride his coattail."
