He wanted to appeal the $25,000 fine the NBA tagged him with Wednesday for his finger to the ear of Utah'sGordon Hayward. Then, he thought better of it. "When you've been to the principal's office," West said, "you don't really want to go back and see that ruler again." "But the way the league is now, I'm not questioning anything. It's a play that shouldn't be in the game. It's not a good example to set for the youth that we're trying to teach to play the right way." The play in question came after some physical interaction between West and Hayward, the Jazz's 6-7 guard. "He [West] and I sat down and talked about that incident," Carlisle said. "And he understands. I made it clear to him that that's unacceptable. He's a competitive guy. But your competitiveness has to manifest in the right way. "By and large, he's had a tremendous year for us. And he's done the right things. "You've got to be a smart player in all areas. You got to play the cerebral game and know when guys are trying to get underneath my skin. Things like that. "Of course [I went overboard]. Those type of plays, it's just not good examples. And after that play, it got the crowd more into the game and Hayward went on to make his next couple baskets.
