Mark Cuban is the first to admit when he has a problem with NBA officiating.
But he took exception to a report that he sought help from a former FBI agent
after the 2006 NBA finals, which will forever be remembered as the Bennett
Salvatore series for that ref’s controversial foul call on Dirk Nowitzki in
the pivotal fifth game.
In the report on NBA officiating by The Oregonian, Cuban was said to have
considered suing the NBA after the 2006 finals against Miami.
He said that was inaccurate, although he did say he may have talked to agent
Warren Flagg later about events surrounding disgraced NBA ref Tim Donaghy,
who spent time in prison after admitting to manipulating games.
“I never contacted him in 2006,” Cuban said. “I apparently talked to him
about Donaghy in 2008 and mentioned 2006 in passing.
“The guy misled everyone into thinking I contacted him after the finals and
wanted to sue.
“Never happened.”
In the report, the agent said that he told Cuban he could sue the NBA and
win, but that Cuban realized that would be “killing the golden goose.”
In Game 5 of that series, officiated by Salvatore, Joe DeRosa and Joe
Crawford, Dwyane Wade went to the free-throw line 25 times, the same number
as the entire Mavericks team.
With 1.9 seconds left, Salvatore called Nowitzki for a foul on Wade, whose
two free throws won the game 101-100. The Mavericks blew a 2-0 lead, losing
the next four games in the series.
Cuban was fined $250,000 for various actions involving officiating in that
game and throughout the series.
