[外電] Riley to return to coach Heat next season
Pat Riley said Thursday he will return as Heat coach next season.
Riley, through the Heat's media-relations department, said he felt it was
important to confirm his status amid what the team termed "numerous media
inquiries and unsubstantiated rumors."
In the wake of the Heat's Wednesday night loss to the Celtics, a media
report in Boston had Riley stepping down following the postseason and cashing
in some of his ownership stake.
Just over two seasons after stepping down as coach, Riley returned Dec. 12,
when Stan Van Gundy left for what he cited as family reasons. Riley, while
also maintaining his dual role as team president, guided the Heat to a 41-20
record the balance of the season.
At midseason, Riley insisted he had yet to decide his future and said a
decision would not be made until this summer.
"I'm going to finish the year," he said at the time. "What comes after that,
we'll see."
On the eve of 2002-03, Riley stepped down after eight seasons as Heat coach,
citing the stress of the job. Upon his return in December, he said the shift
forced him to put off a needed hip replacement.
