Insider Interview with Dorell Wright
HEAT Insider: How has your summer been?
Dorell Wright: “Good. Our motto this season was ‘No Off-season', and a lot of
the guys here took the motto and ran with it – working hard, hitting the
weight room, getting into the gym and just trying to get better. When we get to
training camp we'll be prepared, and hopefully we will have a better result
from last year.”
HI: There is a rumor that you grew over the summer. Is that true?
DW: “That's true. I'm around 6-9, 6-9 ?.”
HI: Are you expecting to play some power forward this season?
DW: “Wherever the minutes are, I'm there. I'm working on my post moves, my
outside shot, my mid-range game and my all-around game so when I'm called to
play whatever position, I'll be ready.”
HI: There's the possibility of you solidifying rotation minutes at small
forward this season, are you excited?
DW: “I'm very excited. Looking at the roster, there's a good opportunity to
step right in and get some good minutes. I see everything as a good opportunity
just like last year when I got to start a few games.”
HI: Because of the possibility that you'll be a starter, are you taking a
different approach mentally and physically heading into this season?
DW: “Yes. My main focus is getting stronger. When I lift weights and get
strong, my body feels good and there aren't as many injuries. It just takes
your game to a different level when you're stronger. (HEAT Assistant/Strength
and Conditioning Coach) Bill Foran has been working with me this summer to get
me stronger so I can be injury free.”
HI: Your good friend Dwyane Wade has been one of your biggest supporters. What
does it mean to have one of the biggest stars in the NBA behind you and what
advice has he given you for the upcoming season?
DW: “He gives me a lot of confidence. He tells me to go hard, stay focused and
whenever your name is called you have to be prepared and take full advantage of
your opportunity. There's so much advice that he's given me. He's always in my
ear trying to help me improve. He calls me during the middle of the night
encouraging me – telling me to keep at it. It's always a blessing to get
advice from someone in the league who is around your age. D.Wade's a guy who
hasn't been around long, so he's learning everyday just like me. Every time he
learns something new, he makes sure I'm the first guy he teaches it to.”
HI: You entered the NBA at 18 years old and now entering your fourth season.
What is the biggest difference between the Dorell Wright of back then and the
Dorell Wright of today?
DW: “I'm bigger, stronger, smarter and more mature. I'm more mature as a
person and more mature as a player. I'm becoming a family man with my baby on
the way. We find out if it's a girl or boy on Sept 19. It's a lot of things
that are keeping me grounded and focused now. When I was 18, I had no worries.
Now I have to take on bigger challenges and more responsibilities. It's all a
blessing to me because I was the 18-year old kid with the big brown suit on
coming in here the first day and now I'm becoming a man. I'm happy that I can
see it myself along with everyone else.”
HI: Are there wedding bells in the future?
DW: “Hopefully in the future we can make that next big step!”
HI: Why should HEAT fans be excited to see more Dorell Wright this year?
DW: “I'm bigger, stronger, I have a more focus and I'm hungry. That's the
biggest thing – I'm hungrier this year. I've been waiting for three years and
now I feel like it's my time. I've been soaking up all the knowledge and it's
my time now to take advantage of my opportunity and help this team get back to
the Finals.”
