[外電] Suddenly a smorgasbord of options
First of all, there is nothing but respect for the likes of ESPN's Mark Stein, Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowski and CBS Sports' Ken Berger. All do first-
rate work in stirring it up.
Of course, that also creates the need for routine cleanup when it comes to a
single-team perspective.
So a look at the names linked to the Heat in recent weeks, days and hours:
Jermaine O'Neal: An option that makes sense on so many levels, unless the status quo with Shawn Marion is the preference. O'Neal provides the needed
post play, shot blocking and requisite 2010 expiring contract. That is, of
course, is if he is able to stay on the court.
Amare Stoudemire: The latest name to enter the equation and one that is
tempting, except for the fact that Marion is about the only contract that works
going out. One has to wonder if the Suns would be up for such a short-term
reunion. Plus Stoudemire holds a $17.7 million option for 2010-11, a number
high enough that it could preclude an opt-out. In other words, if it doesn't
work over the next 18 months, Dwyane Wade could seek greener pastures. Oh, and
Amare has this thing about being his team's focus, something that won't happen
alongside Wade.
Tyson Chandler: Sorry, just don't get this one. Yes, Chandler provides
defensive deterrence and shot blocking. But post-up offense? Uh, not quite.
Plus there is a player option for $13.2 million in 2010-11, with no guarantee
it will be bypassed. If such a deal is made, it essentially removes the Heat
from the heart of 2010 free agency.
Chris Bosh: Again, can't see anything happening this far from 2010 free agency.
The Raptors simply have to try to make it work.
Josh Howard: Yes, Mark Cuban is on record saying he would not deal Howard for
Marion. But then again, Cuban had to sit through the Mavericks' latest
disgrace, Thursday's loss to shorthanded Utah. After efforts like that,
anything could happen. The Heat needs help at center and point guard, not
necessarily small forward.
Brad Miller: The Kings center has stood as Plan B to Jermaine for weeks. But it
also would mean taking on Kenny Thomas and not necessarily unloading Marcus
Banks' 2010-11 cap dollars. Like Howard and O'Neal, Miller could be off the
books in 2010. This remains a viable fallback option.
Caron Butler: Nostalgia tends to make the heart grow fonder. But, as with
Chandler, Butler's deal goes through 2010-11, in this case without any option
clause. Again, the need simply is greater at other positions
