[外電] Daequan Cook is no Big Baby
Went to the NBA draft guide shortly after Glen Davis hit his jumper to tie the
series against the Magic and the reality was sobering.
2007 NBA Draft: Daequan Cook, No. 21, first round; Glen Davis, No. 35 pick,
second round.
So, of course, kept reading.
2006 NBA Draft: Jordan Farmer, No. 26 (pick acquired from Heat by Lakers in
2006 trade for Shaquille O'Neal).
Didn't stop there.
2005 NBA Draft: Wayne Simien, No. 29, first round; Brandon Bass, Ronny Turiaf,
Monta Ellis, Lou Williams, Ryan Gomes, thereafter.
2004 NBA Draft: Dorell Wright, No. 19, first round; Jameer Nelson, Delonte West,
Kevin Martin, Anderson Varejao, Chris Duhon, Trevor Ariza, thereafter.
Of course, to be fair, there was Dwyane Wade in 2003 and Caron Butler in 2002.
But this year, in working without a first-round pick, creativity again will be
required, be it utilizing the selections it holds at Nos. 43 and 60 in the
second round, or trading for a pick later in the first round that does not
significantly impact the team's 2010 cap space.
This time Pat Riley will make any selection after a year away from the bench,
with a singular focus on personnel. It also will come without former General
Manager Randy Pfund at his side.
Yes, there already is plenty of youth in place. But draft youth also is cheap
labor, and a cap- and tax-conscious team never can have enough of that.
To be fair, Daequan Cook probably has had as many signature NBA moments as
Big Baby, but that doesn't mean Sunday didn't highlight one that got away.
