[外電] Free-agent center? It's all Greek to Heat
A few updates while wondering whether Michael Beasley is going and Chris Bosh
is coming:
According to the Heat there is nothing to the message-board scuttlebutt that it
is in heated pursuit of Greek center Yiannis Bouroussis, with the team on
Tuesday blowing off the reports. Who is Yiannis Bouroussis? Besides being an
All-Euroleague first-team center, we can't truly offer that much. According to
the always reliable DraftExpress, the 6-foot-11 center is "not particularly
athletic, but has a massive frame which he uses to draw fouls at a terrific
rate, and is a threat to score with his back to the basket, shooting jumpers
from outside, or finishing pick and roll plays in the lane thanks to his
excellent hands. He’s also an excellent rebounder, particularly on the
offensive end." Keep in mind, the only Heat centers under contract for next
season are Jermaine O'Neal and Mark Blount. Jamaal Magloire is an unrestricted
free agent and Joel Anthony is a restricted free agent. Bouroussis, who is 25,
is compared by Draft Express in its "best cast" scenario to Troy Murphy. OK,
then. At this rate, can a David Padgett reunion be far off?
For as much concern as James Jones expressed during the playoffs that he would
need a follow-up procedure to the surgery on his right wrist tendon that kept
him out for the first half of the season, the team said there are no plans for
additional surgery. Jones had said during the playoffs that the range of motion
in the wrist had remained limited and thought it best could be remedied by
another procedure.
As many teams are doing, the Heat plans to work out a variety of second-tier
veteran free agents on coming weeks. Teams are allowed to work with such
players provided they were not on season-ending rosters. Among those making the
tour around the league is former Heat guard Blake Ahearn.
While Heat players have dispersed, one suggestion here: Instead of sending
DVDs and edits to players of what they need to work on, send complete tapes of
the Hawks' second-round series against the Cavaliers, with a note attached that
reads, "You lost to that team?" The Atlanta series grows more painful by the
day.
