[外電] The word from on high: Pat Riley speaks
The glass doors to the office overlooking Biscayne Bay were opened Thursday,
with Heat President Pat Riley offering a few elusive insights into the
direction of his franchise.
Nothing ground-breaking for sure, but rather an update on where the franchise
stands and where it is headed.
Among the highlights:
Riley said there would be no blockbuster approach to this offseason unless
Dwyane Wade agrees to an extension when that window opens July 12.
Riley said the luxury tax could limit the Heat to carrying a 13-player roster
next season, and that it is unlikely the mid-level exception would be touched,
with the team currently within $300,000 of the dollar-for-dollar luxury tax on
excessive payrolls.
He said qualifying offers would be extended to forward Jamario Moon and center
Joel Anthony, allowing the team to match offers for the restricted free agents.
He said the team might attempt to move back into the first round of next week's
NBA Draft, but the preference would be to purchase a pick, rather than
surrender one of its future first-round selections.
He acknowledged the harsh impact of the 2007 acquisition of forward Ricky Davis
, with this year's first-round pick lost to Minnesota because of the trade.
He said the team was more likely to add a veteran at point guard rather than
add a draft pick into the mix with Mario Chalmers.
He acknowledged center Jermaine O'Neal undergoing numerous unreported
treatments last season on his knees, but that the hope is to have O'Neal back
at a high level next season, with O'Neal also showing positive signs in his
recent workouts.
He said while Michael Beasley will maintain enough weight to play at power
forward, he views Beasley as a combo forward, offering comparisons to the
Magic's Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis.
He said he does not plan to return to coaching, despite being linked to
possible openings elsewhere.
