[外電] Dorell's good looks: What do they mean?
So Dorell Wright apparently has turned himself into quite the playmaker,
perhaps the oversized ballhandler Pat Riley long has coveted.
"He's been passing the ball very well," teammate Dwyane Wade said Friday.
"D-Wright has always been a guy who's looking to pass, but he's had a lot of
turnovers in the past trying to force things. Now, he's not forcing as much.
He's hitting the open guys a lot more. He's hitting guys a lot quicker. So it's
been nice."
Wright has particularly meshed well when working alongside Wade and Quentin
Richardson, two players who worked with him this past summer in Tim Grover's
Chicago sweatshop.
"The chemistry is definitely there," Wright said. "When we're out there, we
look pretty good."
Ah, "when we're out there."
Through the first three days of training camp, there were nothing but raves
from teammates.
Then came Friday, when Wright was held out of the latter stages of the morning
workout.
"We're monitoring how much it's swelling up," coach Erik Spoelstra.
"It" is Wright's left knee, which has undergone procedures each of the past
two seasons.
"We just want to make sure that we're being smart with it," Spoelstra said.
"We want him to go every day. But if we're grinding it out every single day, it
might not be the smartest thing to do."
And that's the rub. It can be argued that no player in camp possesses as varied
a skill set that the sixth-year forward. The problem is he doesn't bring it all
that often, limited to six games last season and 44 of the 82 the season before
He insisted that being the lone player held out Friday morning should not be
taken as a red flag.
"He's really monitoring my knee, making sure it doesn't blow up or any crazy
things like that," he said of Spoelstra. "Every day I come back, I feel
stronger and stronger and I'm getting better and better."
Considering what the Heat has, or doesn't have, at point guard, there is
something to be said for Wright's playmaking potential. It would make a
smallish team less smallish.
It also would give the Heat a lengthy, athletic defender on the wing.
But is he someone you can count on? Physically and mentally, is he all there?
This is the same player who last season advanced a rebound past midcourt
against Cleveland, then turned and flipped the ball back to Wade in the
backcourt for an incomprehensible violation.
"We want to make sure he continues to keep his body healthy and strong," Wade
said. "We know he can help us on the court in so many ways."
At make-or-break time, Wright appears to be ready for the challenge.
"He lost 10 pounds, but kept his strength," Spoelstra said. "His body fat is as
low as it's been. He put himself in position to get through a camp. But he also
put in the time this summer to work on his skills and tighten them up and
refine them."
