Donnie Walsh said Wednesday night that the Knicks have yet to make a final decision on whether to sign Allen Iverson but the Knicks president hinted that the club is leaning strongly in that direction. Iverson, a former MVP, is expected to clear waivers at 6 p.m. today and will become an unrestricted free agent. The Knicks could have competition from Miami, who according to a person close to Iverson said the team is "hot" after him. "Until something's done it's not done," Walsh said. "That's the way I've always been. If he's not signed it's not done." It's worth remembering that Walsh used similar language days before Mike D'Antoni was hired as coach. Walsh has spent the past few days calling his inner circle of NBA friends about Iverson. One of those calls was to Larry Brown, the former Knicks coach, who was with Iverson in Philadelphia when the Sixers went to the NBA Finals. Brown, who has spoken highly of Iverson in recent years, said recently that he would consider adding him to the Bobcats roster if Charlotte needed a guard. What's also interesting about Brown's inclusion in the discussion on Iverson is that Brown had a memorable falling out with Garden Chairman James Dolan. It is believed that Dolan would have to sign off on adding Iverson, which adds another interesting wrinkle to the equation. Historically, Dolan has not wanted controversial players on the roster. He was behind both Latrell Sprewell and Stephon Marbury being run out of town, while Iverson has both a criminal record and a history of causing trouble in the locker room. Iverson's background is one of the reasons the Knicks declined to sign him during the summer. But with the club off to the worst start in franchise history, Walsh appears ready to make a move. "When you're 1-9 I'm not going to be quoted saying I don't think we need to change anything," said Walsh, whose team is now 2-9. "But it's what the change is. Is it going to benefit you really by making the change?" Walsh reiterated that he wouldn't sign Iverson without D'Antoni's consent. D'Antoni knows the team needs to improve but he also sounded concerned about altering the dynamic on the court and inside the locker room. "We'll see if the organization wants to change direction because we'd be changing direction, there's no doubt about it," he said. The Knicks currently have seven players in the final year of their contracts. Iverson would become the eighth. The fear going into the season is that the players who will become free agents on July 1 would be more concerned about padding their stats than winning. So far those fears have been realized. Iverson, who still considers himself an elite player, would be in a similar situation. The only difference is that he would have the ball in his hands a majority of the time and would be looking for his shot. Iverson also has a reputation for not practicing and fighting with his coach. He forced his way out of Memphis after playing just three games with the Grizzlies. Walsh, however, isn't afraid to take a risk. After all, he was responsible for acquiring both Ron Artest and Stephen Jackson when he ran the Indiana Pacers. Walsh even went as far to say that he believes that Iverson's presence would "benefit" the Knicks' younger players. "We wouldn't be considering it if we thought we were functioning well," Walsh said. "And we're not.
