Point guard Carlos Arroyo will continue under contract through the end of the
season, according to front office sources of the Miami Heat.
The sources confirmed that Arroyo's contract became a guaranteed deal after
Wednesday's deadline, ending days of speculation regarding the player's
future on the team.
"He's staying," said the source with primary knowledge of the situation
before Monday's game against the Boston Celtics in Miami.
Arroyo had started the last nine games for the Heat, taking over the duties
from Mario Chalmers. Earlier Wednesday, Miami traded point guard Chris Quinn
to the New Jersey Nets in exchange for draft considerations, but the Nets
waived Rafer Alston, who is expected to sign with the Heat during the next 48
hours.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra had told the Sun-Sentinel.com on Wednesday the
decision to keep Arroyo was in team president Pat Riley's hands, as it was
more a business decision due to the possibility the Heat would go over the
league's luxury tax by keeping Arroyo and signing Alston.
"Carlos has been terrific and his spirit has been unwavering through all of
it," Spoelstra said. "Just in his short time with us, he's had all three
positions, the third point guard position, the backup and now the starter,
and he's handled all of them very professionally, along with a great
enthusiasm."
Arroyo averages 4.9 points and 2.5 assists a game.
