Miller's time nears for Miami Heat
Mike Miller is eager to make his debut, but Heat coach Erik Spoelstra
preaches patience while the swingman recovers from a thumb injury.
By coincidence or by design, Heat forward Mike Miller walked out of his hotel
room on Saturday morning in Washington at the same time as Erik Spoelstra.
Player and coach met at the elevator.
``Before he could even say good morning I said, `Don't even ask,' ''
Spoelstra said.
As in, don't even ask if you're playing against the Washington Wizards.
Miller, who has not made his debut with the Heat because of a thumb injury,
traveled with the team for the first time in the regular season for the
Friday-Saturday back-to-back in New York and Washington.
``He's been dying to come with us, so we thought we'd throw him a bone,''
Spoelstra joked.
No bones about it, Miller's return seems imminent.
If the 6-8 sharpshooter pleaded to play against the Wizards, just imagine his
anxious energy entering Monday night's game at AmericanAirlines Arena when
the Heat (21-8) plays the Mavericks (21-5). It could be the most important
game for the Heat to begin the most important week of the first two months of
the regular season. The Heat plays the Lakers on Christmas.
Spoelstra was scheduled to speak with team president Pat Riley on Sunday
about the timetable for Miller's return. ``It's close,'' said Spoelstra, who
added that he would like Miller to participate in at least one full-scale
practice before being activated.
Miller's return to the lineup Monday against the Mavericks would certainly
act as a shot of adrenaline for the red-hot Heat, but motivation will not be
in short supply. Monday night's game represents many things for the Heat -- a
chance for revenge, a chance for more respect throughout the NBA and a chance
to prove how far the team has come since losing to the Mavericks 23 days ago.
The Heat hasn't lost a game since.
Miami lost at Dallas 106-95 on Nov. 27 and immediately afterward called a
players-only meeting. The Heat has won 12 in a row entering Monday night.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks have won 14 of their past 15 games, losing only to
the Milwaukee Bucks on Dec. 13.
What has changed since the last time the Heat played the Mavericks?
``It's just about becoming a good team and all believing in each other, and
it took time to do that,'' Dwyane Wade said. ``We had the talent, but it took
time for everyone to believe in the system and everyone to understand their
roles.''
For the Heat, the system starts with defense.
The Heat has not given up 100 points to an opponent since the loss to the
Mavericks and enters Monday's game ranked first or second in the NBA in a few
important defensive categories: first in opponent field-goal percentage
(.424), first in opponent three-point field-goal percentage (.304) and second
in points allowed (91.2.).
On offense, the Heat has allowed the fewest blocks per game (2.62) and
second-fewest steals allowed per game (6.48). Limiting turnovers while
turning blocks, steals and misses into fast-break opportunities has fueled
the Heat's 12-game winning streak.
``It took a little longer than everyone expected -- even us -- but it's a
beautiful thing when it works,'' Wade said.
