Third-seed and defending champion Sjeng Schalken reached his first semifinal of the year by scoring a 7-5, 6-4 win over No. 6 seed Tommy Robredo in 's-Hertogenbosch Friday. After lifting the Ordina Open trophy last year the Dutchman went on to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals. 26-year-old Schalken, who is acting as the tournament's ambassador this week, is looking for his first final appearance since Moscow last fall when he lost to Paul-Henri Mathieu of France. On Saturday Schalken takes on countryman Raemon Sluiter, thus guaranteeing the Ordina Open crowd a Dutch representative in the final. Sluiter won the all-Dutch quarterfinal battle against John van Lottum 6-4, 7-5 in the last singles match of the day. Schalken and Sluiter have never before played against each other at this level. Czech Jan Vacek, who ousted No. 5 seed Sebastien Grosjean on Thursday continued his good run at the Autotron by defeating top-seed and countryman Jiri Novak 6-4, 6-4. In the semifinals he takes on last year's Ordina Open runner-up, Arnaud Clement. The 25-year-old Frenchman beat Spain's Fernando Vicente 6-4, 6-4 to secure a spot among the final four for the second week in a row. WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID Clement: "I was a little bit too nervous in the beginning. I was the favorite and I wasn't as cool as I was in the days before. I knew before the match that I had a good chance to win and make the semifinals for the second year in a row." "I was a little bit tired at the start, yesterday was a long day. After the fist set I played really well. I tried to convert all my chances." "I have no pressure in the semifinals. I will enjoy my second semifinal of the year and try to make it to my first final of the year." Schalken: "It's very satisfying. He [Robredo] is a very tough player, I have lost to him before. He is one of the most relaxed players on court. I had to play my best tennis." About playing a fellow Dutchman in the semifinals "It's beautiful for the tournament to have a Dutch in the final. I hope it's going to be me in the final but if not I will also be happy for the other Dutch player." Vacek: "I just feel great. I like to play on grass, this week I was really successful. It would be unbelievable to win in the semifinal." "He [Novak] had to win, that was my advantage. He also doesn't like to play on grass too much. Before the match I knew I had a chance, I'm really satisfied with the match. Last year I made a lot of points in Wimbledon so I had a lot of pressure on me here." Sluiter: "I served very well, that was the key to the match. I knew as soon as the ball is in play John is very dangerous, he has proven that on many occasions." "I was in the finals in Rotterdam and now I am in the semifinals here. I'm going to get that 'sticker' that I'm a home player. But I don't mind, we have three ATP events in the Netherlands and if I am in the finals in all three, I'm happy. " "Sjeng is so confident here on grass. He has a couple of matches under his belt, that's when he is the most dangerous. But it's going to be difficult for him as well to play a Dutchman. I'm sure I have to play my best to beat him." SATURDAY MATCHES Third-seed and defending champion Sjeng Schalken meets fellow Dutchman Raemon Sluiter in the semifinals of the Ordina Open on Saturday. The 26-year-old Monte Carlo resident has reached the quarterfinals or better in five (1997-QF, 1998-QF, 2001-QF, 2002-W & 2003) of his ten appearances in 's-Hertogenbosch and now holds a 18-8 record for this event. This is his first semifinal since he advanced to the final in Moscow last year (l. to Paul-Henri Mathieu). Sluiter is in the Ordina Open semifinals for the first time in seven appearances. The 25-year-old Dutchman advanced to his career-second ATP final in Rotterdam in February (l. to Max Mirnyi) and the week before he was in the Marseille quarterfinals (l. to Roger Federer). He reached his very first ATP final in Amsterdam in 2000 (l. to Alex Corretja). Czech Jan Vacek who ousted top-seed and wild card Jiri Novak in the quarterfinals meets seventh-seed Arnaud Clement for a spot in his career-second final on the ATP circuit. The 27-year-old Prague resident captured his first ATP title at the Costa do Sauipe title in 2001, which was also his first final appearance. Vacek plays the Ordina Open for the first time, while Clement was in the final last year and lost to Xavier Malisse in the opening round in his first appearance in 2001. The Frenchman's previous best result of the season is a semifinal effort in Halle last week (l. to Nicolas Kiefer).
