ORDINA OPEN
's-HERTOGENBOSCH June 21, 2003
Schalken Closes on Back-to-Back Titles
Dutchman to meet Frenchman Arnaud Clement in the
final for second straight year.
In a repeat of last year’s final in 's-Hertogenbosch Dutchman
Sjeng Schalken will take on Arnaud Clement of France.
Schalken captured last year’s trophy after dropping the
first set in the final and is looking for his second title on
Dutch ground. Clement plays in his fifth career final and
his first since last year’s showdown in 's-Hertogenbosch.
Schalken is yet to drop a set in this year’s tournament
while Clement has been involved in two three-set encounters.
Adding to the similarity of the two finalists, both won their
respective semifinals with 6-3, 6-4 wins. No. 3 seeded
Schalken disposed of countryman Raemon Sluiter in one hour
and eight minutes putting on a flawless display in front of a
packed house on the centre court at the Ordina Open. No. 7
seed Clement defeated Czech surprise Jan Vacek in one hour
and 34 minutes, breaking the Czech once in both sets.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Schalken: 'I’m very, very happy to be in the final again. It’s a
confidence boost to beat Raemon Sluiter in striaght sets. He
is one of the best grass courts players. We knew each other
so well. I was a little bit nervous to play him.
About Clement
“We have played each other so many times. We know each
other’s strengths and weaknesses. We always had very tough
matches. I think he has been unlucky against me many times.”
Clement: “I was a little bit tired after my match against Van
Scheppingen but today I felt fine. Today’s match wasn’t too long.
“Last year I had a really good week here but I think my game is
better now than last year. I can do more things on court now. I
did a lot of physical training during my injury break in January
and February. I can play longer matches after that.”
About Schalken
“Last year it was a very good match. I won the first set and then I didn’t
take my chances. Then he raised his level and was just too good for
me. We have played a lot of very long matches. He has very good
timing; his backhand is unbelievable.”
Sluiter : “Instead of the Chinese wall it was the Dutch wall today. It was
tough to come to the net and attack when he is playing like this. He
had unbelievable length in his strokes.
“I’ve got enough grass court tennis in my legs to go to Wimbledon
with confidence.”
