Clijsters to play in Sydney International
SYDNEY (AFP) - The chances of world No.2 Kim Clijsters playing in next week's Australian Open improved when she said she would play in the Sydney International after injuring her ankle in last week's Hopman Cup in Perth.
The 20-year-old Belgian was in doubt for the year's first grand slam tournament when she bruised the bone at the back of left ankle joint, but days of rest, medication and physiotherapy have greatly improved her chances.
Clijsters wants to play at least a match in the Sydney tournament to help her preparation for the Australian Open, getting underway in Melbourne on January 19.
"I want to have a match here so that I don't go into the Australian Openm without having played a match for almost two weeks," Clijsters said here on Monday.
"Being the defending champion here, I want to give it a go and I want to try as hard as I can to get better."
Clijsters, who is engaged to former world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt, said she had jogged on a treadmill on Sunday and went for a practice hit on Monday to gauge her fitness.
"It feels a lot better, otherwise I wouldn't be here," she said.
"I had some other doctors have a look at the MRI scans and they're all very positive.
"But it's just something I have to keep in mind for the future, it's something that's not going to go away. Maybe in the future I might need to have some surgery."
Clijsters has yet to win a Grand Slam singles title and will be seeded second behind compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne for next week's Australian Open.
