Henin-Hardenne Wins Season Opener
SYDNEY, Australia - After finishing 2003 on top of the tennis world, Justine
Henin-Hardenne started off her 2004 campaign on the right note Wednesday,
surviving a windy day at the adidas International in Sydney.
The World No. 1 needed 1 hour, 23 minutes to record a 64 61 victory against
Conchita Martinez, improving to 4-0 lifetime against the Spaniard.
Henin-Hardenne dusted off a bit of off-season rust, commiting 35 unforced
errors to only 27 winners.
"I'm very happy that I won this first match," Henin-Hardenne said. "It's never
easy to come into a tournament after a long break, especially in these
conditions. It was very windy. Playing Conchita in my first round is not an
easy draw."
I served pretty well. She didn't give me any rhythm to start the match, so it
wasn't easy at all, but I came through."
Henin-Hardenne, who finished last year with eight titles including two Grand
Slam victories, will face Chanda Rubin in the next round. The No. 7 seeded
Rubin moved into the quarterfinals with a 75 62 victory against Russian Lina
Krasnoroutskaya.
Lindsay Davenport showed that she has recovered from the foot surgery that
brought an early end to her 2003 season, surviving a three-set battle with
Vera Zvonareva, 16 62 75. Davenport, the No. 4 seed this week, will again be
put to the test in the quarterfinals, where she'll face No. 6 seed Elena
Dementieva, a 62 63 winner against fellow Russian Elena Bovina.
Following the win, Davenport said, "I'm happy that I was able to turn it
around, play better, and in the end just be able to pull out the close match.
I think she played very well, especially in the beginning. She was going for
a lot of big shots and seemed to handle the wind much better that I did in
the beginning."
"I came here because I wanted to get used to the wind and the heat. Today, I
got the wind; maybe tomorrow I'll get the heat (smiling)."
No. 3 seed Amelie Mauresmo also had a successful start to the new year,
defeating Meghann Shaughnessy in straight sets, 62 63. Mauresmo had a
remarkable finish to 2003, reaching the finals of the WTA Tour Championships
and then leading France to the Fed Cup title two weeks later. Mauresmo has
traditionally started off the year well, winning the Sydney title in 2000 and
reaching the final of the Australian Open in 1999.
Mauresmo will face recent familiar foe Anastasia Myskina in the quarterfinals,
a 63 60 winner over Amanda Coetzer. This serves as the sixth meeting between
the two, the last four occurring just in the past year and Mauresmo leading
the series 4-1.
Gold Coast winner Ai Sugiyama couldn't continue her winning ways, losing to
Nathalie Dechy, 62 63. Sugiyama, the No. 8 seed this week, began the year by
reeling in four wins during the first week of the season, but couldn't
continue the trend against Dechy.
However, Dechy's luck didn't continue as hours later she took the court again
for her second round match and lost to Francesca Schiavone, 60 64.
Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi inherited an open quarter of the draw following the
withdrawal of No.2 seed Kim Clijsters. Lucky Loser Denisa Chladkova took the
defending champion's place in the draw but was unable to get past the crafty
Smashnova-Pistolesi, falling 46 76(3) 61.
Smashnova-Pistolesi will meet Schiavone in the quarterfinals, looking to break
her losing record to the Italian.
