Australian Open Championship Preview
MELBOURNE, Australia – For the 18th overall time, ninth time in a final and
third time in a Grand Slam final, Belgium compatriots Justine Henin-Hardenne
and Kim Clijsters will be on opposite sides of the net. Here's how they stack
up to do battle in the year's first Grand Slam:
HEAD-TO-HEAD – Clijsters Leads 9-8
1998 Ramat Hasharon – In the very first meeting, 16-year-old Henin defeated
her 15-year-old countrywoman Clijsters to reach the
semifinals in the ITF circuit event, 61 76(3).
1999 Reims – In their first meeting in a final, Henin again prevailed for the
ITF circuit title, 64 64.
2001 Indian Wells – Two years after their meeting in Reims, Clijsters defeats
Henin for the first time, winning a three-set second
round match, 16 64 63.
2001 Roland Garros – Their first meeting in a Grand Slam, Clijsters advances
to her first Grand Slam after again rallying after
dropping the first set to even the series at 2-2,
26 75 63.
2001 's-Hertogenbosch – Henin was able to get revenge on her Roland Garros
loss a week later in 's-Hertogenbosch, winning her
third title of the year, 64 36 63.
2002 Sydney – Clijsters begins the year with a win against her compatriot,
landing in the Sydney semifinals with a straight sets win,
76(5) 62.
2002 Australian Open – Their first meeting in Melbourne, Clijsters moves into
the semifinals with a 62 63 win.
2002 Rome – After splitting their first two meetings on clay, it was Henin who
evened the series at 4-4 with her 75 62 victory.
2002 WTA Tour Championships – Their only meeting at the year-end championships,
Clijsters wins easily in straight sets en
route to her first year-end title.
2003 Sydney – The first of eight meetings in 2003 went to Clijsters, a 62 63
victory in the semifinals.
2003 Antwerp – The first to take three straight wins against the other,
Clijsters improves to 7-4 against Henin-Hardenne with a
62 76(3) win.
2003 Berlin – Henin-Hardenne snaps three match losing streak to Clijsters,
winning title in Berlin with 64 46 75 victory.
2003 Roland Garros – Henin-Hardenne wins first Grand Slam title and second
straight win against Clijsters with decisive 60 64 win.
2003 's-Hertogenbosch – Their second meeting in three years in the Dutch final
, Clijsters gets revenge for 2001 loss at the grass
court event when Henin-Hardenne retired in second set
with left wrist and finger strain.
2003 San Diego – Their fourth straight meeting in a final, Henin-Hardenne
regroups from first set loss to win, 36 62 63.
2003 US Open – Their second meeting in a Grand Slam final, Henin-Hardenne
again took center stage, defeating Clijsters 75 61.
2003 Filderstadt – In their latest encounter, Clijsters improved to 3-1
indoors against Henin-Hardenne with a 57 64 62 win.
