Henin-Hardenne takes title
Henin-Hardenne takes title
Saturday, 31 January, 2004
Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne has captured her third Grand Slam title with a
three-set victory over compatriot Kim Clijsters in the women's singles final
of Australian Open 2004.
The No.1 seed was made to fight for her 6-3 4-6 6-3 win, but was a little too
good for the No.2 seed in the deciding set.
Henin-Hardenne was right on top for most of the first set, breaking
Clijsters' serve in the fifth game to lead 3-2 and then a second time in the
ninth game to take the set 6-3.
The No.1 seed looked to be on her way to a straight-sets win when she broke
in the sixth game of the second set to lead 4-2, but Clijsters fought hard to
break back immediately and went on to win the next three games as well,
saving one break-back point in the tenth game before drawing level on her
second set point.
Henin-Hardenne, serving first, started the deciding set much more strongly
than her fellow Belgian, breaking Clijsters twice in a row - once to love -
to race to a 4-0 lead.
But Clijsters again found something extra when she looked down and out -
breaking back, holding serve and breaking back a second time - but then was
unable to hold her serve in the eighth game as she attempted to square the
ledger.
Serving for the match at 5-3, Henin-Hardenne stood firm to add the Australian
Open title to the French and US Opens she won last year - all three coming
with the defeat of Clijsters in the final.
