I was close... 02-02-2004
I look back on the Australian Open with satisfaction. Before the tournament
started, I didn't even dare te hope to make it into the second week, let alone
to play the final. It has been my best Grand Slam finale so far.
Three interesting sets, suspense until the end. If I can make it to 4-4, maybe
Justine gets a mental disadvantage. I wasn't really thinking about it at the
time, but when you hear Pam Schriver and John McEnroe say afterwards that the
ball really wasn't out, well, that's though. Then you really realize you were
very close.
But, that doesn't change the fact that Justine has become much stronger. Those
serves! And that's what was off with me, the last few weeks. I can't train my
serves to the extreme as it is because of my shoulder, and then with the ankle
injury I had even less practice. But it will be alright.
It's nice to be able to walk around now without painkillers and
anti-inflammatories. Those pieces of bone will have to be removed eventually,
but I try to postpone surgery as long as possible. I can't imagine being out
for four months or even longer.
I'm staying in Adelaide for a few more days. My mother is a bit ill, so we're
waiting a bit to go back home. Meanwhile I'm resting and making some
preparations for our wedding. And afterwards I'm going to the Open Gaz de
France. I want to play some matches before the Proximus Diamond Games in
Antwerp begin. To play for my home crowd, I'm looking forward to that.
See you soon,
Kim
