World No.1 to Defend Roland Garros Title
BRUSSELS, Belgium - World No.1 Justine Henin-Hardenne announced Tuesday she
will return to Paris this year and defend her Roland Garros title, having been
out of action since early April.
Henin-Hardenne contracted a virus similar to mononucleosis around the time of
her last official match, a semifinal loss to Amelie Mauresmo at Amelia Island,
only her second loss in 27 matches so far this year. In the match,
Henin-Hardenne began fatiguing and feeling dizzy after going up a set and 5-2,
squandered a match point, and fell to the Frenchwoman in three sets.
After that match, Henin-Hardenne was forced to rest from competition and did
not even resume practicing until May 3, about three weeks later. Despite
announcing her defense, she admits she is not in her top form.
"Physically, I have gone through difficult weeks, and it taught me to put
things in perspective," she said at a press conference in Brussels Tuesday.
"It is evident that I am still not at 100 percent, but, in any case, I feel
ready."
The Belgian also dispels any mention of herself as the favorite for the title.
"You cannot consider me a big favorite for this tournament," she said.
"My main objective is to have fun out there."
"I go to Paris with one clear objective - to win my first match."
Henin-Hardenne has followed up on her incredible 2003 season with wins at
Sydney, the Australian Open, Dubai and Indian Wells. She lost in the
semifinals of Doha to Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova and to Mauresmo in Amelia
Island.
Roland Garros begins in Paris this coming Monday.
