Here's a quick glance at the four matches on tap for Day 8 at the USTA National Tennis Center. (1) Justine Henin-Hardenne (BEL) vs. (14) Nadia Petrova (RUS) - Henin-Hardenne Leads 5-0 After four losses to the current world No.1 in 2003, Petrova has been fortunate to not cross paths with the defending champion at this event so far this year - until now. Henin-Hardenne has marched past the Russian on every previous occasion to a 5-0 record. Each player has dropped a set this week with Henin-Hardenne showing some struggles against Obziler, while Petrova came back from a set down against No.19 seed Farina Elia. (9) Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) vs. (27) Mary Pierce (FRA) - First Meeting Two-time Grand Slam winner Pierce has impressed many this week in Flushing Meadows - first by dropping just four games in her first two matches and then by upsetting Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova. But equalling as strong this week is Kuznetsova, who has produced three straight sets victories. This will be the first meeting between these two players. (29) Eleni Daniilidou (GRE) vs. Shinobu Asagoe (JPN) - Daniilidou Leads 2-0 Many believed Anastasia Myskina and Paola Suarez would occupy these spots in the draw after three rounds of tennis, but three-set survival by Daniilidou and very solid form by Asagoe has given one of these players a legitimate shot at their first Grand Slam quarterfinal. Daniilidou has won both previous meetings, most recently in Auckland back in 2003. (5) Lindsay Davenport (USA) vs. (11) Venus Williams (USA) - Series Tied at 12-12 Chapter 25 of the rivalry that looks like a long novel will take place for a spot in the quarterfinals. At one point, Williams had won nine of 10 from Davenport, but Lindsay's unstoppable play this summer has produced a victory in the final at Stanford and a semifinal win against an injured Williams the following week in Los Angeles. Davenport has a previous semifinal victory against Williams at the US Open back in 1998, but the last time they met at this venue was in 2000, when Venus defeated Lindsay in the final for her first title in Flushing Meadows.
