Sharapova Shut Out as Lindsay (中)
In the day's second semifinal, Davenport, the top seed, steamrolled to a 60 60
victory over reigning Wimbledon champion and No.3 seed Maria Sharapova of
Russia. The 28-year-old lost only nine points in six service games in the 49
minute demolition, a stark contrast to their two previous meetings - close
three-set wins for Sharapova in the 2004 Wimbledon semifinals and the Tokyo
[Pan Pacific] final earlier this year.
"I was just trying to go with my game and not really worry about how to play
her so much," said the veteran American. "I was trying to worry about my own
shots. At the same time as I was hitting well, I was still getting a lot of
errors from her."
"It's obviously a good win, and I felt like I played well and handled the
conditions really well."
"From her first return, she just banged the ball in," said a stunned Sharapova
after the match, the first double -bagel loss of her Sony Ericsson WTA Tour
career. "She's the biggest and most consistent hitter out there. From all over
the court today, she could hit any big shots, change direction, hit balls to
the same side. She was just dictating play all the time."
"I'll learn and I'm going to be stronger from these experiences."
It was just the third perfect scoreline of its kind for Davenport in her
12-year professional career, the last time being in the opening round here last
year over Italian Mara Santangelo.
"I would have never guessed that in a million years before the match, if
someone had told me that," she said. "It was an odd position to be in, to win
a match against such a good player and not have lost a game."
Davenport has had a fairly smooth path to the final. After a first round bye,
she defeated Bulgarian world No.89 wild card Sesil Karatantcheva 63 62, then
faced a stiff test in the third round from No.27 seed Meghann Shaughnessy,
battling her compatriot for nearly two hours before prevailing 62 26 62. In the
fourth round, she claimed a 61 64 victory over Ukrainian Viktoriya Kutuzova, a
473rd-ranked wildcard who had upset No.15 seed Flavia Pennetta and No.17 seed
Amy Frazier en route. In the quarterfinals, Davenport survived a close first
set against French No.7 seed Nathalie Dechy, then took control for a 76(2) 60
victory.
