Sharapova Shut Out as Lindsay(下)
Clijsters has enjoyed a similarly uncomplicated path to the final. She
dismantled world No.91 Nicole Pratt of Australia 62 61 in the opening round,
then upset No.16 seed Shinobu Asagoe of Japan 63 63 in the second round. She
then took on two young Russians in the third and fourth rounds, holding off
No.72 Anna Chakvetadze 61 76(4), and routing No.30 seed Evgenia Linetskaya 62
61. Linetskaya had beaten second-seeded Amelie Mauresmo a round earlier. In the
quarterfinals, Clijsters survived a one hour, 49 minute 61 36 62 battle against
Spanish veteran and No.23 seed Conchita Martinez.
Both players bring impressive Indian Wells win-loss records into the final.
Davenport's 42-9 record includes title runs in 1997 and 2000, and runner-up
finishes in 1998 to Hingis, 2003 to Clijsters, and last year to Justine
Henin-Hardenne. Clijsters' equally impressive 20-3 mark includes her 2003 title
run, in which she defeated Davenport 64 75 in the final, as well as a runner-up
finish to Serena Williams in 2001. Last year, she had to withdraw prior to her
third-round match due to her left wrist injury.
The two have played fourteen times previously, with Clijsters leading the
rivalry 8-6. After Davenport won five of their first six meetings, all of which
took place in 2000 and 2001, Clijsters began to dominate, winning seven of
their last eight, all played in 2002 and 2003. Clijsters has won their last
five, and routed Davenport 62 63 in the 2003 US Open semifinals, their last
meeting. Clijsters has won eight of their 11 career matches on hard courts.
"She gave me a lot of problems the last few times we played," said Davenport
about her next opponent. "She was No.1 and playing well, and it's great to see
her back."
"She gets a lot of balls back and is always making me play two or three extra
shots - I'm going to have to be really for that tomorrow and try to execute as
best I can."
"In the past, I've had really good matches against Lindsay, definitely a few
that stand out for me," said Clijsters. "I'm definitely going to enjoy my time
out there tomorrow."
Davenport is gunning for her 47th career title, while Clijsters aims for her
22nd
