Former Charleston Champ Grabs First Round Win
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Former champion Justine Henin-Hardenne began her clay court
season with a victory on Monday at the Family Circle Cup.
The 2003 winner in Charleston prevailed despite having a tough first round
matchup against No.10 seed Jelena Jankovic, 57 64 63. The victory was
Henin-Hardenne's first in Charleston since her title in 2003 after having to
withdraw before the start of the 2004 event.
"It was good when I was up 2-1, then 4-1 in the first set, but I lost my
concentration and wasn't as aggressive," Henin-Hardenne said. "She was playing
better and learned where I was going to be (on the court)."
After missing almost seven months due to a viral illness and then a knee injury,
Henin-Hardenne returned to action at Miami where she reached the quarterfinals.
She will attempt to reach the third round in Charleston when she next faces
Shuai Peng, a 62 64 winner against Marissa Irvin.
"I played a top 20 player in my first match here so this gives me more
opportunities to improve my game from here on," Henin-Hardenne said.
Jankovic wasn't the only seeded player to fall on Day 1 of action at the South
Carolina event. No.9 seed Elena Likhovtseva also didn't survive the first round,
falling to Klara Koukalova, 63 64. Meanwhile, No.11 seed Ai Sugiyama moved past
qualifier Yuliana Fedak in three sets, 63 46 64 and No.16 Fabiola Zuluaga
cruised to a straight sets win over qualifier Severine Beltrame, 63 64.
Qualifier Marie-Eve Pelletier had a shaky start, but held her ground in a 57 64
62 victory against wild card Jill Craybas. The Canadian player will next face
world No.1 Lindsay Davenport, who comes to Charleston fresh off her title on
Sunday at Amelia Island.
A pair of teenagers needed three sets to move on as qualifier Viktoriya
Kutuzova defeated fellow qualifier Kristina Brandi, 16 60 61 and Nicole
Vaidisova moved past qualifier Shahar Peer, saving two match points in a 46
76(8) 62 victory. Vaidisova will next face No.3 seed Anastasia Myskina.
Other winners on Day 1 include Alina Jidkova, a 64 46 62 victor against Dally
Randriantefy, and Denisa Chladkova, who moved past Maria Elena Camerin, 62 36
75. Jidkova will next face No.2 seed Elena Dementieva, while Chladkova will
take on defending champion and No.4 seed Venus Williams.
