But who would have predicted such a scenario two months ago when she made her comeback in Miami, her first tournament since the US Open last September? After having her 2004 season disrupted by a virus and the first part of her 2005 campaign scuppered by a knee injury, the Belgian is rapidly nearing the level that saw her scoop three Grand Slam titles and become world number one. A quarter-finalist in Florida before succumbing to Maria Sharapova, the 2003 Roland-Garros champion then strung together eleven victories to prevail at Charleston and in Warsaw. In South Carolina, she ominously beat the world number one and winner from Amelia Island, Lindsay Davenport (following her withdrawal), up-and-coming French player, Tatiana Golovin, then the runner-up from the last French Open, Russia’s Elena Dementieva, in the final. In Poland, Carlos Rodriguez’s protege showed every scrap of her determination to return to the very top. Trailing 4-2 in the last set of the final to Svetlana Kuznetsova, who had seen off Kim Clijsters in the semis, Henin-Hardenne turned it round to triumph 3/6, 6/2, 7/5. This fine run of results has seen her make a massive leap up the rankings, from 40th in the world before Miami to 15th after Warsaw. “When I came back, my aim was to play a lot of matches,” she explains. “Now, I’ve accumulated a few on clay and that has given my confidence a big boost before Roland-Garros.” Let her rivals take note. The women’s clay court hierarchy should be clearer after the Berlin and Rome tournaments, as these two major meetings will feature the cream of women’s tennis: the American, Serena Williams, France’s Amelie Mauresmo, the Russians, Maria Sharapova, Anastasia Myskina (Roland-Garros 2004 winner), Elena Dementieva, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Nadia Petrova and Vera Zvonareva. Not forgetting Belgium’s dynamic duo, Kim Clijsters and… Justine Henin-Hardenne. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 218.160.48.90
