Day 7 - Kim Clijsters Interview
Sunday, May 29, 2005
Q. Despite the loss here, you're smiling. What happened? Did you not feel a
hundred percent fit? Is it the injury you had from Berlin?
KIM CLIJSTERS: No, that was all fine. Just I think the inconsistency of
playing, you know, big matches, playing three?set matches as well. I think
that's all. You know, it's sort of what I've been saying in these -- in my
previous press conferences. You know, I was winning my matches easily, but I
didn't have that good feeling out there.
I think when you play lower?ranked girls, it's okay. I'm a good enough player
to deal with that at that time. But when you play someone like Lindsay, you
know, you have to ?? you know, you have to play almost your best tennis. And
I did that for a while. I was playing really well. You know, but just not
consistent enough yet.
Q. Were the double-faults attributable to just your own inconsistency or any
pressure you were getting from Lindsay, that you felt you had to do more,
especially the last two sets?
KIM CLIJSTERS: Well, both. I think, you know, it's the combination of the
both, I think because if you feel that you're under pressure ?? you know,
when I played against her in America, I was playing well, I was feeling well,
then you deal with it. You know, it comes automatically.
And here, you know, you feel like she returns really well and she just goes
for that first shot. But then, you know, if you don't have the confidence or
if you don't have that good feeling out there on the court, you know, playing
like that or hitting those serves, you know, yeah, it's definitely going to
put you a little bit on your back foot, I think.
Q. It seemed like she was playing better than you normally have seen her play?
Is she playing well enough to go far in this tournament?
KIM CLIJSTERS: Well, I definitely think, you know, she started hitting the
ball really well at the end of the second set. She started to, you know, hit
her shots really clean. I think, you know, I just didn't ?? you know, didn't
let her move well enough any more, just because I didn't have any confidence
in my own strokes. But, you know, overall I think I still ?? you know, I just
try not to worry about that, you know, halfway of that second set and the
third set.
I started really well. Up until 3-1, I felt I was hitting the ball well. And
that's something I need. That's the feeling that I'm going to try to take
with me onto the grass court season. But I definitely still have a lot of
work ahead.
Q. You showed a lot of frustration with your return of serve and then with
your forehand, especially the last set and a half. It seemed like it didn't
matter which way you were trying to hit it, you couldn't control it. What was
going on there?
KIM CLIJSTERS: Well, you know, that's something, because it changes so quickly
in tennis. You know, it can change so quickly. That was the frustrating part
is that I was ?? you know, I felt like I was, you know, controlling the
rallies in the first and beginning of the second set. Then all of a sudden,
you just lose all the feeling of your strokes.
That's the most frustrating part of it is that, you know, I was trying. I was,
you know, trying to work, work into my rallies. You know, that's tennis
sometimes. It can be very frustrating.
Q. Given the ease with which you cruised through the earlier rounds, can you
put into words how disappointed you are at your exit?
KIM CLIJSTERS: Well, that's what I've been saying in these previous press
conferences. I mean, my first rounds definitely didn't feel like they were
easy. The score was easy, but I didn't feel like ?? you know, I felt like I
had a lot of work to do, you know, before I was starting to feel more
comfortable out there. So I don't think the score, you know, always tells the
right feeling of the player.
Q. On that basis, did you feel at any stage through this tournament, therefore,
that you weren't able to win the tournament itself? Did you not feel you could
do that when you arrived here?
KIM CLIJSTERS: Yeah, I mean, I've always said that. I was here just to get
matches. You know, first of all, I was very, very glad to be here. You know,
in Berlin, they were saying straightaway, you know, "There goes her clay court
season." So I'm happy that I had those four matches here and that I'm able to
take those with me on to my next tournament, Eastbourne, so I can take those
with me.
You know, I have to try to stay positive and work my way through, you know,
these tougher times where I feel like, you know, I have to work harder for my
game and I have to focus a little bit more on other things, as well. You know,
it's something that I have to focus on and, you know, just try to, yeah, be
positive and hopefully turn things around again.
Q. I know you don't like to make excuses, but it looked like at times during
the third set, because of your knee, on the wide forehands and sometimes on
your serve that you weren't comfortable getting a push. True or untrue?
KIM CLIJSTERS: Untrue (smiling).
Q. Are you saying that just because of "no excuses"?
KIM CLIJSTERS: I'll just say "untrue." It's fine (smiling).
Q. There was no pain whatsoever?
KIM CLIJSTERS: No.
Q. Will you have to continue that strapping of your leg indefinitely?
KIM CLIJSTERS: No, I hope not, for that much longer. It restricts you in a way.
Q. I thought so.
KIM CLIJSTERS: I'm definitely going to try to build down the strength of the
tape because it's a pretty tough ?? like pretty strong tape. That definitely
stops me in a lot of movements.
But, you know, I'm going to try to see how the grass court is. You know,
because there I'm going to be lower again, so maybe I just have to be a little
bit careful in the first few practice sessions on there. But, yeah, I
definitely want to gradually.
Q. Is that applied every day for every match?
KIM CLIJSTERS: Yeah.
Q. How long does that take?
KIM CLIJSTERS: I don't know. I'll have tests done. I'm still doing all my
exercises. My knee starts to feel better and better every day with my exercise.
There's still a couple of movements where I still feel a little bit of a
stitch (sic) when I'm doing it. All that has to be gone until I am able to
play without the tape.
Q. No. 1 beats No. 14. Do you consider this was an upset?
KIM CLIJSTERS: I mean, I don't look at matches like that.
Q. We do.
KIM CLIJSTERS: I know. You write whatever you like (smiling).
