Navratilova tips Henin-Hardenne for Wimbledon win
By Simon Cambers 13 minutes ago
Nine-times Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova says she believes Justine
Henin-Hardenne can follow up her French Open triumph by winning the Wimbledon
title for the first time.
The 48-year-old Navratilova, speaking after what she said could be her last
Tour singles appearance at the Ordina Open on Monday, said the Belgian's
strength of mind made her the one to beat.
Henin-Hardenne, who was out for more than six months through injury and
illness last year, won three claycourt titles in succession before beating
Mary Pierce of France to win her second French Open title.
"She keeps her head about her better than anyone else," Navratilova said.
"She totally takes it a day at a time and never lets anything bother her. I'd
make her the favorite right now."
Henin-Hardenne reached the final at Wimbledon in 2001, losing to Venus
Williams, but she has yet to triumph at the All England Club, something
Navratilova said could be the biggest obstacle to her success.
"She's never won Wimbledon so that's a minus, but I think she's got the game,
the confidence and the motivation to win it," she said. "She believes she can
win it.
"Considering she had an injury too (in Paris), to dig in, on clay, is
impressive, very impressive."
Serena Williams was the last woman to win the French Open and Wimbledon in
the same year, in 2002.
Having lost to Maria Sharapova in last year's final, she will be itching for
revenge, providing she can overcome the ankle injury that kept her away from
Roland Garros.
"Serena is a wild card, we haven't seen her much," Navratilova said.
"We'll see what shape she shows up in. I think she's probably the best
athlete."
Despite Serena's Australian Open victory, she and her elder sister Venus no
longer dominate the grand slam events in the way they did in 2002/2003, when
they contested five of six grand slam finals over a 13-month period.
Though Serena's Melbourne victory was her first grand slam win since
Wimbledon 2003 and despite the fact that Venus has not won a grand-slam title
since 2001, Navratilova said their best may not necessarily be behind them.
"I hope not," she said. "I think it's too early to say that.
"People were writing me off when I was 30 and they are only 25, in their
prime. Physically, they can definitely keep going."
