Clijsters Beats Former Doubles Partner to Advance by Erin Bruehl Friday, September 2, 2005 Kim Clijsters and Ai Sugiyama are former doubles partners who won seven WTA Tour titles in 2003. However, they faced each other for the ninth time as singles in a third-round matchup in Louis Armstrong Stadium with Clijsters in almost complete control, taking the match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Clijsters, the No. 4 seed from Belgium, was facing her first ranked opponent of this US Open in No. 30 Sugiyama of Japan. The match started with the two holding serve through the first three games, matching each other's groundstrokes with several long rallies before Clijsters broke Sugiyama in the fourth game after reaching deuce three times. And Clijsters sailed from there. In the fifth game, Sugiyama double faulted four times to give Clijsters the break, four of her eight double faults in the match. Clijsters was in her rhythm as she used her great speed to track down almost every ball, several times throughout the match going into a split slide to make a save. Her winners were placed into corners and hugged the lines as she led Sugiyama in winners, 18 to three for the match. Clijsters picked up where she left off at the start of the second set, breaking S ugiyama in the first game with several clean winners down each line, and then again in the third game after holding her own serve to take a three-love lead. Sugiyama would not go out quietly, however, as she broke Clijsters for the first time in the sixth game on her first break point chance. The two traded service breaks for the next two games with Sugiyama winning both the eighth and ninth to climb to 5-4 but Clijsters took the match in the tenth after several Sugiyama shots sailed wide and long. It was Clijsters' sixth victory over Sugiyama to three losses. Clijsters, ranked No. 4 in the world will now face either Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela or Shahar Peer of Israel in the fourth round. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 202.175.53.136
