Clijsters to Clash With Dementieva in Quarters
Filderstadt, Germany – With her win over qualifier Krolina Sprem in the second
round of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Thursday night, Kim Clijsters proved
she doesn’t plan to slow down anytime soon. The reigning US Open champion
began her bid for a fifth straight title by ousting Sprem, a former Top 20
player, 63 62 in Filderstadt.
Clijsters recorded her second victory over Sprem this year, having defeated
her at the same stage in Los Angeles where she went on to win the title. The
Belgian racked up her 61st win of the season and is closing in on the World
No.1 ranking.
“I'm pretty happy with the way I'm playing right now,” Clijsters said.
"I'm comfortable on the court and playing aggressive, which was key today.”
Clijsters will bring her demanding 7-1 series lead against Elena Dementieva
into their quarterfinal battle on Friday. The Russian recorded her only win
against Clijsters when they first clashed in 2000. Clijsters has since won
their last seven consecutive match ups.
The fifth seeded Dementieva outlasted Nathalie Dechy 57 63 64 to win her
fourth consecutive match against the Frenchwoman. Dementieva is working her
way through the draw to move up in the rankings, but also in hopes of moving
up in the Porsche Race to the Championships, where she currently sits at No.10,
two outside of the top eight that will qualify for the prestigious year-end
Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships.
Dementieva has now reached the quarterfinals or better at nine of 15 events
this year, with her best result coming at the Tier I event in Charleson where
she finished as the runner-up to Justine Heninn-Hardenne. Filderstadt is
Dementieva’s first Tour event since reaching the semifinals of the US Open
for the second consecutive year.
Amelie Mauresmo, the No.3 seed, faced little resistance against Jelena
Jankovic in their second round match. After dropping the first set 60,
Jankovic retired with a viral illness, sending Mauresmo into the quarterfinals
where she’ll face Nadia Petrova.
“It is always a strange feeling not to be able to finish the match,”
Mauresmo said. “I felt good today and hope to do well tomorrow against
Petrova. I hope I do well in the next weeks because I want to play the Sony
Ericsson Championships in L.A.”
In six appearances at Filderstadt, Mauresmo has compiled a 12-5 record and
posted her best result here last year by reaching the finals. The former World
No.1 has won two titles this year (Antwerp and Rome) and improves her 2005
match record to 46-13.
Petrova, the No.6 seed, booked a place in the quarterfinals by breezing past
fellow Russian Elena Likhovtseva 61 61 in the opening match on Centre Court.
With the win, Petrova evened the head-to-head series between the two at 3-3.
Petrova has now reached the quarterfinals or better in 14 of 20 events.
