Clijsters Receives Cayenne S As 2005 Porsche Race Winner
Belgian star Kim Clijsters has been rewarded for her outstanding season by
receiving a new Porsche Cayenne S as the winner of the 2005 Porsche Race to
the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships. The world No.2, who captured the US
Open among a Tour-best nine titles this year, compiled a perfect 9-0 finals
record in 2005, leading the points standings after the regular Tour season,
which comprised 62 tournaments staged on five continents.
Clijsters's Race victory is all the more remarkable considering the 22-year-old
spent much of 2004 on the sidelines with a left wrist injury that ultimately
required surgery. Due to her inactivity, the former No.1 was ranked No.134 in
March before sweeping consecutive Tier I titles at Indian Wells and Miami
(both times unseeded), defeating five of the world's Top 6 players in the
process. She then won Eastbourne on grass in June and three US Open Series
events – Stanford, Los Angeles and Toronto – after which time she took the
lead in the Porsche Race for the first time (on August 22).
Clijsters maintained that Race lead for all but two weeks heading in to this
week's season-ending Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships presented by Porsche,
boosting her points total with more titles at the US Open (her first
Grand Slam singles title), Luxembourg and Hasselt. In the end, Clijsters won
the Porsche Race (with 4665 points) over world No.1 Lindsay Davenport (4606)
by a mere 59 points.
"This year was an unforgettable year for Kim and for her large contingent of
fans," said Porsche Tennis Delegate, Markus Guenthardt, "On behalf of Porsche,
I'd like to congratulate Kim on winning the 2005 Porsche Race to the Sony
Ericsson WTA Tour Championships."
"Kim's return from injury this year was one of the greatest comebacks in
recent times," said Sony Ericsson WTA Tour CEO, Larry Scott. "Her immediate
success in at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells and NASDAQ-100 Open in
Miami showed she deserved to be back among the game's elite, and it wasn't
long before she was at the top of women's tennis. Our sport is all the better
for having her there."
Clijsters will be honored Saturday during the Tour's year-end gala party at
the famous Spago's restaurant in Los Angeles.
"It's been an amazing year, that's for sure," said Clijsters. "At the start
of 2005 I never would have imagined I'd be No.2 in the world and winner of the
Porsche Race at the end of the season. It gives me a lot of motivation to aim
even higher in 2006."
This is the second time Clijsters has finished in the Top 2 of the Race
standings since Porsche came on board as the Tour's promotional sponsor in
North America and presenting sponsor of its Season-Ending Championships. She
finished second to compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne in 2003 by just 70 points.
