Injury to keep Clijsters out of Fed Cup final; return planned in two months

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Kim Clijsters' wrist injury will keep her out of
next month's Fed Cup final against Italy, hurting Belgium's hopes of winning
the title.
The second-ranked Clijsters said Tuesday she would be wearing a brace for up
to six weeks and plans to return to the WTA Tour at her home tournament in
Hasselt, the Oct. 30-Nov. 5 Gaz de France event. The defending champion already
pulled out of the U.S. Open, which starts Monday.
"Now that I have to miss the Fed Cup final, I hope I will be able to play in
front of my own public," she said on her Web site. "It also would be perfect
preparation for the Masters the week afterward."
Belgium hosts the Fed Cup final on Sept. 16-17 and would have been an
overwhelming favorite if Clijsters would have been able to team with French
Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne.
There had been a slim hope she would recover in time for the final in
Charleroi. Instead of Clijsters, Belgium will now have to count of Kirsten
Flipkens, ranked only 122nd in the world. Italy has two top-20 players in
Francesca Schiavone and Flavia Pennetta.
Clijsters was forced to quit a match last week at the hard-court tournament
in Montreal after falling on her surgically repaired wrist. An MRI exam and
X-ray showed the problem was worse than originally believed.
Clijsters missed most of the 2004 season with the wrist injury. She's dealt
with assorted ankle, knee and back problems, too, and points to her health
problems as a reason that she plans to retire in 2007, even though she's only
23.
She is 36-9 this year with two titles, plus semifinal appearances at the last
two Grand Slam events, the French Open and Wimbledon.
