Henin in Commanding Form
Henin in Commanding Form
Monday, June 30, 2003
Third-seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne was in commanding form on Court 3 as she
defeated Mary Pierce of France 6-3, 6-3 in 53 minutes to reach the quarter-
finals for the third year in a row.
Pierce was playing in the fourth round for the fourth time in eight
apperances at Wimbledon only to come up against an inspired and hard-hitting
opponent who was clearly confident of progressing in the draw against a
fellow French champion.
Pierce, giving away eight years to her opponent, dropped serve twice in the
first set and once in the second set but did not seriously challenge the
Henin serve herself.
The first break came in the seventh game when Pierce saved one break point
with a service winner only to make a backhand error in the next rally. The
next break cost Pierce the first set, two forehand errors giving Henin-Hardenne
the set after 25 minutes.
Henin-Hardenne continued confidently in the second set but Pierce was able to
stay with her until the eighth game, a run that included saving two break
points at 3-2 to Henin-Hardenne.
At 4-3, Henin-Hardenne broke again, creating two break points with a strong
forehand down the line. Pierce saved the first with a volley winner but Henin
won the next four points to complete the break and hold three match points.
Pierce saved two, but the third saw Henin-Hardenne force a backhand error, and
she was into the last eight against either Svetlana Kuznetsova.
