I can still hardly believe it! 11-08-2003 I can still hardly believe it that I now have become the world's number one. The thought got to me right after the match and left me a bit stunned. Right after that last ball I have thought about it, but I'm just not the kind who would go wild anyway. But then again a lot goes through your mind right then. I haven't thought about it during the match itself though, well not very much. I was able to pin down Davenport in that first set, but in the second set she already played a lot better. Especially her service was really good and then you know that the times ahead aren't going to be that easy anymore. The break came in right on time: new clothes, head under a tap of cold water, eat a bit. And then, by breaking immediately, I showed her I was there to stay. It did sound awkward when they spoke about it after the match, that I was one of the twelve women players of all time to become the number one in the world. As a child you'd always dream about being the best, but then you don't realize what it actually means. Watching Roland Garros and Wimbledon on the television really has given me the urge to get there yourself. As an under-16 you would aim at a top five spot. Then winning matches and tournaments becomes priority and everything else seems far away. Only this year did I truly think about the posibility itself. After the match the whole atmosphere was busier as well, the press conference was a full house. I was given a big cake with congratulations. I handed out pieces to the press and to the few Belgian fans who were waiting at the entrance of the press hall. Only then did I feel the efforts. Later that day Marc, Eveline and me held a little celebration party at the hotel: ordered some food, played cards and laughed quite a lot. Tomorrow, however, is a long day. The filght nearly takes the whole day. And I have to take care of that injury. I got the strain during the match against Sharapova by trying to still catch a ball. A movement I have tried to avoid during the final. Nothing serious, it only requires a bit of precaution. Hey, cu soon and thanks for all your help and support!
