Henin-Hardenne, Mauresmo advance in Toronto
August 14, 2003
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - French Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne
and defending Rogers AT&T Cup titlist Amelie Mauresmo were second-round
winners Wednesday at Canada's premier women's tennis event.
The second-seeded Henin-Hardenne blew past France's Marion Bartoli 6-3, 6-3,
while the third-seeded Mauresmo came from behind to best Russian Elena
Likhovtseva 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 at the National Tennis Centre here at York
University.
Mauresmo saw her first action since mid-June after suffering a rib injury
that forced her to miss Wimbledon. The French star defeated American Jennifer
Capriati in last year's Rogers AT&T Cup final in Montreal. The event shifts
between Toronto and Montreal each year.
The high-flying Henin-Hardenne is seeking her fifth title in six events,
including a hardcourt championship in San Diego just two weeks ago. She
secured her first-ever Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in June, where
she topped fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters in the final. She also stopped
Clijsters in the San Diego title match.
Up next for Henin-Hardenne will be French Open semifinalist Nadia Petrova,
a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) victor against Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual.
Petrova is seeded 14th this week.
Five other seeds advanced on Day 3, as No. 4 Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova
humbled American Jill Craybas 6-1, 6-2; No. 5 Russian Anastasia Myskina
snuck past Aussie Nicole Pratt 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4; No. 9 Russian Elena
Dementieva dumped Slovakian Janette Husarova 6-1, 6-1; No. 10 Russian Vera
Zvonareva zipped past American Mashona Washington 6-1, 6-1; and No. 12
Russian Elena Bovina handled Zimbabwe's Cara Black 6-3, 6-2.
Myskina and Dementieva will square off in an all-Russian third-rounder
on Thursday, while Zvonareva will encounter eighth-seeded Yugoslavian
Jelena Dokic.
Wednesday's other action saw Argentine Paola Suarez subdue France's Mary
Pierce 6-4, 7-5; Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik down France's Emilie Loit
6-1, 3-6, 6-3; and Russian Lina Krasnoroutskaya dismiss France's Virginie
Razzano 6-3, 6-2. Suarez is rewarded with a third-rounder against Hantuchova.
The surging Russians went 6-1 Wednesday, while French players are a
dismal 1-4, with 15th-seeded Nathalie Dechy still on the docket.
