Henin-Hardenne Shows Near-Perfect Form
October 07, 2003
No. 2 seed Justine Henin-Hardenne was on top of her meticulous game against
Conchita Martinez in Filderstadt’s second round. Henin-Hardenne defeated
Martinez 6-0, 76(1). “It was a nearly perfect first set,'' Henin-Hardenne
said. “It was unbelievable, one of the best sets of my career.”
While Henin-Hardenne advanced to the quarterfinals, the rest of the draw
was deciding on second round advancers. All three qualifiers competing
today lost in their first main draw match, including Fabiola Zuluaga to
Elena Bovina, and Lisa Raymond’s decline to Filderstadt’s 2002 Finalist
, Daniela Hantuchova. Wildcard Mary Pierce topped Qualifier Cara Black
62, 60.
Henin-Hardenne is close to taking over as the world No. 1, if she reaches
the finals at the Porsche Grand Prix, dependent on whether current No. 1
Kim Clijsters falls before the final round. Henin-Hardenne could also
become No. 1 if she defeats Clijsters in the championship.
Wednesday in Filderstadt features Nadia Petrova and Elena Dementieva in
yet another battle between Russians. Dementieva is 10-1 the last three
weeks, claiming two consecutive titles at Bali and Shanghai. Petrova
normally has the upper hand in their face-offs, leading the series 5-1.
No. 5 seed Amelie Mauresmo will be in action against American Meghann
Shaughnessy. This will be their first meeting between the 24-year olds.
Anna Pistolesi will take on Ai Sugiyama in their first meeting since 2001.
Pistolesi holds an impressive 15-3 record since the end of July, winning
back-to-back titles within the time frame.
