Henin-Hardenne fights past Pistolesi in Zurich
October 15, 2003
No. 2 seed Justine Henin-Hardenne continued her remarkable 2003 season run into
the quarterfinals of the 20th Swisscom Challenge, but not without stubborn
resistance from Israel’s Anna Pistolesi. Henin started strongly, winning the
first set 61 and served for the match at 54 in the second, but the
diminutive Israeli fought back to lead 65, serving for the second set before
surrendering her serve. The tiebreak was a close run affair, won by the
Belgian seven points to five, after Pistolesi fought back from 24 to 4-all.
Other second round wins were recorded by No. 7 seed Vera Zvonareva (who will
play Henin next) over experienced American, Amy Frazier. The Russian
advances to play Henin-Hardenne in her 11th quarterfinal and her sixth at a
Tier I event – all this year.
Jelena Dokic continued her fighting qualities a round further, avenging a
one-sided loss to Alexandra Stevenson in the first round of Moscow two weeks
ago. This time the Yugoslav won eight of the last nine games to finish the
match, despite suffering from a cold: “It feels great. Winning these two
matches has given me a lot of confidence. I think it’s the best I’ve played
in 14 or 15 months. At this point, I’m focusing on next year and trying to
have a good start there. I’ve been working very hard the past few months,
and sometimes it takes a while to see those results in matches” was how
Dokic summarized her performance.
In the day’s remaining second round match, Nadia Petrova upset No. 4 seed
Elena Dementieva for the sixth time in eight career meetings, after losing to
her compatriot in the first round of Filderstadt last week.
In Thursday's remaining second round matches No. 1 seed Kim Clijsters faces
Katarina Srebotnik. The two haven't played in nearly 18 months and they have
are one all (1-1) in head to heads. Srebotnik advanced to the second round
on Tuesday when Mary Pierce retired down 60 20. The evening match will be,
No. 3 seed Amelie Mauresmo faceing Zurich's defending champion and home town
girl Patty Schnyder. Mauresmo is up 7-4 in head to heads and defeated
Schnyder last week in the second round of Filderstadt 62 76(3).
Other matches include; qualifier Tina Pisnik vs Ai Sugiyama and Elena Bovina vs
Paola Suarez.
