Clijsters not thinking of number one tag Thu 16 October, 2003 19:13 BST By Will Gray ZURICH, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Ending the season as world number one is not an obsession for Kim Clijsters but her mind could turn to it if she faces Justine Henin-Hardenne in the Swisscom Challenge final, she said on Thursday. "That would be great but it's not something that I, my coach or my parents are thinking about," she said. "Even when I was in a position of getting to number one, and in Filderstadt last week, I have always felt like that," Clijsters said after breezing into the quarter-finals with a comfortable victory over Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik. Clijsters retained her top place when she and fellow Belgian Henin-Hardenne, ranked one and two, met in the Filderstadt Grand Prix final in Germany last weekend and they are on course to meet again in Sunday's Swisscom final. "(The number one ranking) is always something that whenever you do interviews or press conferences or something it always gets thrown up, but I know I have to do it on the court. I just have to play well enough to get through." Clijsters's year started with a victory in Sydney and she then won her first Tier 1 series title when she beat American Lindsay Davenport at Indian Wells in March. She contested the first all-Belgian grand slam final when she lost to Henin-Hardenne in the French Open in May, and was also beaten by her compatriot in the U.S. Open in August. TOP SPOT Clijsters, 20, secured number one status when she beat Davenport in Los Angeles in early August, before the U.S. Open, becoming the fifth youngest player to reach the top spot. "When I played Lindsay in LA in the final, I was getting closer to it. When I started serving for it, and when you break, that is when you start thinking 'well, this could really happen'," she said. "That was the time I was thinking about it for the first time during a match. But I will always have this on my resume that I was number one in the world and that is something that no-one can take away from me." Clijsters, who took a five-week break to rest during the middle of the season, is determined to fight to the end of the year as others already begin to think of the Christmas holidays. She has two tournaments remaining and said: "It sort of motivates you even more. I hear a lot of players in the locker room planning their holidays and stuff but you have to give 100 percent, then you can have a holiday. "I will just try to finish as well as I can and as professionally as I can. I don't want to be thinking about my holidays. I think you can enjoy them more when you get there as well." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 203.219.101.22
